It is that time of year – you are getting exited because the holiday that you are planning is almost upon you and you are ready for it! HorseEvents.co.uk has created a list of 10 things you should remember to do for your equine friend before you go to ensure that they have a happy time while you are away and you can relax completely knowing that you have done everything to ensure they enjoy the time as much as you!
- Leave your equines in the charge of someone that both you and your equines know and trust completely. Leaving your horse in the care of someone they have had little if anything to do with can cause all manner of issues from a horse who refuses to come in on an evening with a stranger to a stressed and unhappy horse. We will call these individuals foster carers.
- Try to arrange a second person to act as a reserve incase the person you have asked to care for your equine takes ill or has an emergency. Remember to chose this person on the same principles as at point 1.
- Prepare a contact list which should include your:
· Vet
· Dentist
· Farrier
· Yard manager
· Both ‘foster carers’ of your equines
- Advise those on your contact list of your absence and inform them of your ‘foster carers’ names just in case their services are required. It may also be possible to come to a payment agreement for any emergency work that may need to be carried out on your equine while you are away. For instance they may give you an extra 30 days interest free to pay any bills that occur, you could discuss the types of treatment etc that you would want your equine to have in your absence.
- Ensure that you have enough feed, hay / haylage, medicine and bedding for the period that you are away. It would also be wise to run through your equine’s dietary requirements with your foster carer so they know exactly what types of feed your horses have – it may save on vets bills while you are away!
- If your horse is on a special diet / any treatments or medication, write the instructions down as well as talking the foster carer through it.
- Place an information card on your horse’s stable door with the name of the foster carer and contact tel no in case of emergency.
- Try to ensure all rugs etc are clean – 2 weeks is a long time for your equine to go with dirty rugs, fly masks etc.
- Check the dates that your livery fees are due and if it is while you are away arrange payment with the yard owners.
- Enjoy your holidays!
